Brian Querry
began his experiences with music at the age of 4, singing a solo in church.
More than 27 years later, Brian has been involved in all facets of
music education. Throughout elementary, middle, and high schools, he
was involved with choral and instrumental ensembles and school musicals,
including county, district, regional, and all-state festivals. In college,
Brian served as president of the student MENC chapter, as well as on the
state board for the Pennsylvania Collegiate Music Educators
Association. His compositional career began in high school when he arranged
and composed songs for members of his high school band and choir. This continued
into college, where Brian wrote several solos and small ensemble works. He
also wrote the score for the short film "Clown", produced by local filmmaker
Cavalcade Pictures. Since then, he has written dozens of works for choir,
band, soloists, and small ensembles, including the fall 2004 premiere of
Spirit Song by the Bethany (WV) College Symphonic Band. Brian
has also performed at many concerts and festivals, including singing God
Bless America at PNC Park in September of 2001 and The Star Spangled
Banner at local venues and events for the past five years.
Brian was born in January 1977 in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and
has remained a resident of southwestern Pennsylvania his entire life. He
attended Leechburg Area High School, graduating with honors in 1994. He received
a B.S. Degree in Music Education from the Duquesne University School of Music
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in May 1998, from where he graduated with honors.
While at Duquesne, Brian studied trumpet with Roger Sherman and music education
with national speaker Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser. He also received numerous honors
and awards, including being named Outstanding Music Education Student. He
is continuing his studies at Duquesne, currently studying for his masters
degree.
Brian is in his eighth year as a music teacher with the Burrell School District
in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, where he has taught general, choral, and
instrumental music at all grade levels. Currently, he teaches middle school
general music, elementary choir, and supervises the middle school television
station, WBUC.
While directing the high school bands, he premiered two works - "We Will
Remember" and his arrangement of "The Star Spangled Banner" - both inspired
by the tragedies of September 11, 2001. He also arranged and wrote several
songs for the pep and marching bands.
In addition to his duties in the public schools, Brian also is very active
in his faith and Christian music. He is the Worship Arts Director for the First Church of God in Kittanning, PA, a post he has held since August 2007. Previously, he was a member of the Contemporary Christian
Band The Message and served as sanctuary choir director, vocal and instrumental soloist, praise quartet member,
and as a chairman of the Communications Committee for the North Apollo Church of God. He also served as the
children's choir director for the Apollo Free Methodist Church.
Brian is a member of MENC: The National Association for Music Education,
PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators Conference), and the Westmoreland County
Music Educators Association.
He currently resides in North Apollo, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Jean,
and his children, Victoria and Tyler.
